A customer’s restoration journey

This week we are honoured to have spoken to Peter Linn, a lifelong classic car enthusiast and owner from Essex who now lives in Brisbane, Australia.

Peter currently owns a selection of cars, including a 1955 Austin Healey 100, which was bought part restored in 2008, and a 1947 MG TC/Q type special, which was purchased as a basket case in 2016. These are the last of a string of British classics starting with a 1952 Series MM Morris Minor in 1966, through 1953 MG TD owned from 1970-1986 (in the UK), 1966 Daimler 2.5 litre V8 (1992-2003 in Australia), 1955 Special bodied Austin Healey 100 ‘the Ward Special’ (2003-2015) which is now in Holland, and an Ausca bodied Healey 100.

The current Healey was found in a paddock in NSW where it had sat for 20 odd years. Most of the mechanical bits were long gone, so it needed a replacement engine (3.8 litre Holden V6). The MG was bought from a friend as a project. The chassis is one from a car he owned in the ‘60s which he crashed. He then replaced the chassis and subsequently straightened the original one and collected bits to build another car. That’s what Peter bought. The body is a fibreglass Q type replica of which a handful were made in Melbourne.

A personal passion for restoration

Peter gets a particular kick from building something out of nothing (or very little) as well as resurrecting cars that very nearly cease to exist. That was the case with both the Healey and the MG, and also the Ausca bodied car, which was built from scratch after finding the body in Victoria.

Holden Vintage & Classic have helped Peter bring these cars back to life

Peter has used Holden Vintage & Classic products in many of his restorations. In the MG, he used an alloy rocker cover, sidelight innards, reflectors, halogen headlamp globes, electronic SU fuel pump, badge bar clips, cabling, spark plug caps, spring bonnet catches, and a pair of goggles and driving gloves!

In the Healey, he needed headlamp seals, Healey-specific rear indicators, headlamp stone guards, reflectors, lift the dot studs and decals.

And in the Ausca bodied car (now sold) he required complete headlamp units, MGA tail lights, reflectors, indicator lamp lenses and a few other small parts.  When asked about his experience, he said, “HVC is the first place I refer people too when they’re looking in particular for electrical and hardware bits”.

So how does Peter enjoy his projects once they’re finished? Well, as a member of GEAR (Golden Era Auto Racing), Peter told us he runs the Healey and the Ausca at the club’s two monthly track days at the 2 Queensland race tracks – Lakeside and Queensland Raceway. He also enjoys taking his classics to shows such as the annual All-British day. We are pleased that Peter has found the right hardware, electricals and accessories to help him enjoy his restored cars to their maximum potential and look forward to seeing what he has up his sleeve in the near future!

Order Your EZCarLift Now

If you’re keen to do some restoration or repair work on your classic motor from your home garage but are worried you’ll run into practical problems, we have the solution. It might be you have nowhere to store a conventional, bulky car lift, or find it a struggle to manoeuvre around a static car in close quarters. Exclusive to Holden customers, our new EZCarlift will give you the space and freedom to work on your motor from home.

Beautifully engineered in America, the EZCarlift is able to raise a vehicle 26 inches off the ground and can hold up to 4,400 lb in weight. It’s completely compact and easy to assemble, meaning that we can ship it to you via a regular courier.

So how does it work?

The main difference between the EZCarlift and a traditional car lift is that it doesn’t require a heavy hydraulic motor. In fact, all that’s needed to get this lift going is a high powered reversible drill with variable speeds. Once the lift arrives, you will slot the two separate pieces of steel underneath your car. The type of cross beams you use will depend entirely on the car you own. To check out the full list of cross beam compatibilities, click here.
You will be able to connect your drill to the end of the lift, switch it on and watch your car lift up with ease. Once it’s at the right height for your restoration purpose, you can get to work with full access to your vehicle.

The other fantastic feature the EZCarlift offers is its detachable wheels. Should you want to manoeuvre the car or push it to another area of your garage, you can use the four wheels supplied with the lift to do so. It’s up to you whether you fix the wheels into a ‘backwards and forwards’ or fully rotating position. For a demonstration on attaching the wheels to the lift, watch Julian Parker show you how it’s done in the video.

When you’ve finished the work, you’ll be able to power down the EZCarlift with your drill and store the lift on its own wall plates, out of the way until you next need them.

Take the hassle out of your home based car repairs and restorations by ordering your EZCarlift today and receive your order within 7-10 working days.

Millers Oils For Your Classic Car

When you own a classic motor, it’s critical to select an engine or gear oil that has been specifically formulated for a classic vehicle and its components, rather than a standard modern oil. This is because classic vehicles have unique features not found in modern cars, such as lower revving, hotter engine temperatures and greater metal-to-metal tolerances. They can also feature rope or cork seals, and might have excess carbon build up making their lubrication needs unique.

One of the things that makes classic oils different is that they have a higher viscosity. This means it is more resistant than modern oils, offering improved oil consumption and a lesser chance of the bevel gears and cross shafts flinging it off. Furthermore, oil seals are less likely to leak when the oil is of a high viscosity, saving you from a possible major problem.

The other important feature of classic car oil is the anti wear additives. Historically, car oils contained a zinc and phosphorous compound known as ZDDP, but due to its effects on exhaust emission systems, the mixture was phased out and engine designs were altered so that it was no longer required. Unfortunately, the newer oils can cause substantial damage to classic vehicles which is why it’s critical to use an oil based on the original formula.

If you’re wondering which classic oil brand to go for, we recommend Millers Oils.

Millers Oils was founded all the way back in 1887 by John Watson Miller, although at the time it was called Millers Bros. It was, and still is, very much a family run business, and has played a major role in transportation lubricants over the years. In fact, Millers Oils were the first producer of long drain interval oil for trucks, and also produced the first diesel specific engine oil for cars!

What we offer

We currently stock three types of Millers Oils – Engine, gear and worm steering wheel.

Engine Oil

Pistoneeze mineral oil is a monograde oil designed for veteran and vintage cars built up to the 1960s, but can also be used on cars built up to the 1930s if you feel confident that no dirt or debris has accumulated in the crankcase. Featuring moderate amounts of detergent, this mineral based oil provides excellent engine wear and anti oxidant protection, and remains at the right consistency even in the higher temperatures often seen in classic engines. We currently stock SAE 40 and 50.

Gear Oil.

High viscosity gear oils are essential for protecting your gear system from wear. We offer a number of different gear oils, including EP 140 GL4 which is designed to stand up to extreme pressure thanks to special high performance additives. We also stock a selection of vintage green gear oils which are formulated to prevent rust and ensure the longevity of your gearbox.

Worm Steering Box Oil

This is a high viscosity, low friction mineral oil for worm steering wheels designed to lubricate and preserve the steering system, creating an easier and superior driving experience.

Product Of The Week – 2 Tonne Light Duty Car Jack

One of the most important pieces of equipment you can own for servicing your classic motor is a car jack. A car jack is critical for maintenance and repair and is therefore a staple tool for anyone who’s serious about keeping their classic car in tip top condition, or undertaking a restoration project.
So what do they do? Well, car jacks are used to lift the car high enough to access the essential components during a repair procedure. You might use it to complete an oil change, or to replace brake pads, tires and rotors. As well as raising the car itself, jacks can also elevate the motor. This is to provide additional clearance within the engine bay, for example, during an engine mount replacement procedure.
When working with a jack, safety is advised. The use of axel stands will prevent avoidable accidents and damage. It is also important to think about the maximum weight load you’re looking to support and match these between the jack and the axel.
Our product of the week is a trolley 2 ton light duty jack.
A trolley jack is a type of floor jack. It consists of a trolley with four wheels that contains a hydraulic cylinder which is responsible for raising and lowering a lever arm. This lever arm has a small platform that interacts with your car or truck. The advantages of working with a trolley jack over alternative designs is that they are extremely easy to use as they do not need you to put in much physical effort to lift a vehicle. The rear swivelling castors help to keep the jack properly positioned underneath the car which conveniently minimises the risk of jack lean and makes for an all around safer repair session.
The trolley 2 ton light duty jack features a 2 tonnes capacity and a lifting range of 130 to 350mm. Its overall size is 492 x 218 x 132mm.
So, if you’re interested in purchasing a jack or looking for similar models in our range, head over to our dedicated page now and place your order.

Product Of The Week – POR-15 Engine Paint

The aesthetics of your classic car engine are important, especially if it serves as a focal point for your vehicle, which is why we recommend POR-15 Engine Enamal.

If you like the idea of painting your classic motor engine, you should know in advance that you will not be able to use standard car paints. Engine paint uses a specific formula in order to withstand extremely high temperatures while resisting gasoline, oils, and other chemicals – something that standard paints simply do not do. Furthermore, the paint needs to be robust enough to last a long time without chipping or wearing away, so it’s important you select the correct brand.

POR-15 enamel paint offers a glossy, hard finish and maintains excellent colour retention as well as optimal heat resistance. A decent engine paint like POR-15 is designed to withstand around 500 degrees Celsius so that your under hood temperature will not affect the engine’s appearance.
Furthermore, POR-15 enamel engine paint provides excellent chip resistance, and also helps prevent rust – which, in the long run, saves you money on restoration and cleaning.
Painting an engine can be done either before assembly or after, it doesn’t really matter. However, always make sure pre existing paints have been properly removed before applying POR-15. Here’s our tips for application:

1. Create a well ventilated environment before you begin painting, with an ideal temperature being 22 degrees Celsius.
2. Take some time to sand the engine. You can use a wire brush to remove old paint and debris. Rust is ok to paint over, but loose rust will be problematic if not removed.
3. Clean the block with a grease and wax remover to get rid of unwanted oils.
4. Wipe the engine down to minimise loose particles.
5. You will not need to apply a primer when using POR-15.
6. Stir the paint. Do not shake.
7. You may want to thin the POR-15 engine paint with a thinner, but do not do this by more than 20% (1 part thinner, 5 parts enamel paint)
8. Use a brush to apply the paint. One coat should be sufficient.
9. Allow to dry for at least 8 hours.
10. Should a second coat be desired, wait 24 hours before applying.

POR-15 boasts a superior colour and texture to other engine paints on the market. This is because POR-15 mix their paint in such a way that it has a composition of 80% solids. This means a high proportion of paint goes onto the engine and less solvent disperses into the atmosphere.

We are proud to offer a range of POR-15 engine paints, so head over to our dedicated POR-15 page now and place your order. There’s also an instructional video you can watch for further information on engine paint application. Please note that typically a pint (0.473 litre) is enough to cover an entire engine.

Why It’s Important To Keep Your Classic Car Clean

British weather in February is never brilliant, is it? Strong winds and relentless rain make it impossible to hold an umbrella up without it blowing inside out, while mud and sludge seem to get on just about everything.

123 Ignition

IMG_1884123Ignition are one of the most reputable brand names in the world of ignition systems for classic cars. With optimal respect for the originality of the classic vehicle, 123Ignition units are designed with reliability and durability in mind.

It was 10 years ago that 123Ignition first hit the classic car scene by replacing faulty electrics for a Citroen 2CV’s distributor. Since then, the brand has gone from strength to strength and upholds the highest standards that customers have come to expect.
This is why we stock a range of 123Ignition electronic distributors for your classic car requirements.

So what makes 123Ignition different?

In a nutshell, each 123Ignition distributor hides a lot of high-tech gear inside of it while retaining the appearance of an original distributor.
Many other systems of electronic ignition demand that the original mechanical centrifugal advance system remains intact. Even points- assisted systems use the original points operating cam which is vulnerable to wear and tear which results in the inconsistent running of the engine. Additionally, they all require a separate box for the corresponding electronics.
123ignition solves this problem by containing all the elements in one straight forward module inserted in place of the original points box. The points operating cam is taken out altogether as well as the advance weights and the 123ignition distributor is then bolted on.

The Advantages Of Using 123Ignition

There are a number of advantages in choosing 123Ignition distributors. These include:

• Straight forward installation
• No maintenance
• Superior fuel consumption
• Better emissions
• It’s impossible to burn out the ignition coil
• Improved starting
• A variable dwell angle to prevent overheating of the ignition coil
• Built in LED
• Value for money

What’s on offer?

We stock a variety of 123Ignition distributors. These include:

6 Cylinder Universal

This 123 Ignition Distributor can be used in place of most 6 cylinder Lucas distributors (6 or 12 volt). It can be wired for either positive or negative earth vehicles and can also be swapped for both clockwise and anti-clockwise distributors. With an impressive 16 advance-curves, you’ll be able to fine tune your engine using an easily accessible switch. It also offers spark balancing, automatic dwell and a convenient power cut off one second after engine stops.

4 Cylinder Universal

This 4 Cylinder Universal distributor can be used in place of 4 Cylinder Lucas distributors, (6 or 12 volt negative earth). As with the 6 Cylinder Universal, it has 16 advance curves that enable you to fine tune your engine by using a small switch, as well as an automatic dwell, spark balancing and power cut off just one second after the engine stops. Bear in mind this isn’t the ideal for Triumph owners that require a connection for a mechanical rev counter.

Mini Universal

If you’re looking for a distributor specifically designed to replace Lucas distributors on classic Mini engines then this is the one for you. Similar to the 4 and 6 Cylinder Universal, it has 16 advance curves that enable you to fine tune your engine by using a small switch, as well as an automatic dwell, spark balancing and power cut off just one second after the engine stops.

Rover V8 Post SD1

For vehicles with a negative earth only, this electronic distributor is designed to replace Lucas distributors on post SD1 Rover and Land Rover V8 engines. Due to its unique setup, you’ll need a shielded USB cable and a laptop with internet connection to connect the distributor.

Sprite and Midget Universal

For Austin Healey Sprites and MG Midgets, this distributor replaces Lucas distributors and also offers 16 different advance-curves so that you can fine tune your engine. As you’d expect from a 123Ignition distributor, it also offers spark balancing, automatic dwell and automatic power cut off after one second of the engine stopping.

Of course, we have many more 123Ignition distributors in stock. Head over to our dedicated page for more information.
